Dr. Matt Bachman, manager of Steinway's newest showroom in Hunt Valley, Maryland, treated Piano Prodigies to an exclusive behind-the-scenes workshop on the history and inner-workings of pianos on Wednesday, April 29. We were thrilled to learn about the 12,116 moving parts that make up our instrument (way more complex than a BMW!) and how pianos are made. Students had the opportunity to participate in a lively Q&A session... and after about 60 minutes of enthusiastic questions we transitioned into the recital element of our evening, with everyone performing on a Steinway B that was fresh from Millennium Stage at the Kennedy Center. WOW!

Participant feedback (will be updated):

"I had a wonderful time at Steinway piano workshop. I learned a lot of things and one thing I learned is that there are over twelve thousand parts in a piano. I also learned that the woods they use for pianos has to be at least three hundred years old and comes from an Alaskan island." (Erica)

"I really enjoyed going to the Steinway store. It was really cool to learn how a Steinway is made and see the different parts of the piano! It was really nice to have all of our  question answered especially because we had soooooo... many! I think my favorite part was learning how pianos are made, and getting to play it after I saw how much work goes into the process of making it." (Taura)

"I thought that the coolest thing was how the Steinway piano was made. I thought it was very surprising that the wood comes from an island off the coast of Alaska. Also, that the wood air dries for 2 years. I think that it was also really cool seeing the inside of the piano! I can’t believe that the inside of the piano is that cool!" (Darya)
